Since 1945, U-Haul has been serving do-it-yourself movers and their households. Like many other successful ventures, the concept for U-Haul was generated out of need. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. U-Haul co-founders L.S. «Sam» Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized that need and acted upon it. Their visionary approach spread the cost of ownership among many users, facilitating the mobility of the populations of the U.S. and Canada.

The covered wagon of the pioneers morphed into orange U-Haul trailers. In the process, an industry was born. Discharged from the Navy in the summer of 1945, 29-year-old Sam and Anna Mary tried to rent a utility trailer to move their possessions from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore. It couldn't be done. They had to take only what they could fit in the car. «No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.» «Small luggage-type passenger automobile trailers were being rented from 'rental lots' in Los Angeles. Each lot had from 20 to 40 trailers which were rented locally for approximately $2 per day,» recalled Shoen in his book «You and Me,» «I recognized that here was an item with considerable utility value which had not been exploited at all in the Northwest or in the San Francisco-Oakland area.

I was intrigued with the business potential of this idea, especially from the standpoint of one-way rentals.» The Shoens reasoned that many other families had a need similar to theirs: the short-term availability of a trailer that could be rented «here» and left «there.» No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.

What an incredible U-Haul experience!  If  you are like me, you have endured rude staff, trucks that are not ready when you reserve them, filthy offices, and ridiculous examples of 'service'.  The staff at U-Haul Oakland Road completely changed my opinion of U-Haul.  Staff greeted me, (amazing!), the truck was ready, (more amazing), and they were responsive to my high need sense of hurry without complaint, (awesome).  The office is clean, the check in and out is incredibly efficient, and the truck was in fantastic condition.If you hate U-Haul, find moving heinous as I do, and dread the experience, fear no more!  GO TO THESE GUYS.In case you didn't get the message:GO TO THESE GUYS FOR MOVING NEEDS

I needed a U-Haul for my move to Milpitas. I noticed this location was here when I'm on my way to Costco or driving on Tully Road. I reserved a cargo mini van online for my move. The price for the day was $19.95 plus mileage/fees. When my brother and I arrived, we registered at the front desk. They had the cargo van ready and parked in the front of the store. The cargo van was clean and had no bad odor or smell. The cargo van was pretty big and was enough to add a mattress, TV, small furniture, etc. We made it back within 3-4 hours to return the van. Driving from San Jose to Milpitas only cost me around $60, which was a pretty good deal. When I got home, I noticed I forgot to take my condo parking permit from the cargo van. When I called, they told me the cargo van was already taken by another customer for rental. Once it's return, they can get it for me.I was kind of worried and hopefully they don't take it. After 5 hours, they called me and found the parking permit. I was glad and thank them for their great service!

This is probably the worst experience I've had with U-Haul. The manager mr. Daniel is conniving and deceiving so be careful and review your contracts. I do have to say the employees themselves are outstanding and very knowledgeable. After running a business for several years and having to use this service I've learned a lot from U-Haul. I rented a van for one day and due to a family death and other incidents I was not able to return it on time. Other U-Hauls of worked with us in the past when such incidents have happened and automatically renewed the contract and extended out for the better rate. Mr. Daniel was not having a good day went ahead and called us and told us to return the vehicle and after an employee consulted with him and suggested to extend the vehicle contract mr. Daniel decided to close the contract out and make a new one that's giving me a higher rate. Let me give you an example of how bad mr. Daniels is, I paid $350 4 using a vehicle 12 miles.  I will be filing a complaint with U-Haul directly in regards to this. He could have extended the contract and save me some money but as he said himself he made the decision decision to close the the contract anwsd. make a new one. As a manager these are very low ethics a very bad way to conduct business and will in turn gets you bad reviews.

Had a great experience using this location. Reserved online and this wasn't my first choice to rent from, I explained to them it was a little out of the way for me and they immediately offered to give me a 20 extra miles for the inconvenience. Excellent communication, truck was clean, easy pick up and drop off. Even forgot my garage opener in my truck and they found it and kept it until I could swing by and pick it up. Would definitely recommend this usual location.
