Since 1945, U-Haul has been serving do-it-yourself movers and their households. Like many other successful ventures, the concept for U-Haul was generated out of need. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. U-Haul co-founders L.S. «Sam» Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized that need and acted upon it. Their visionary approach spread the cost of ownership among many users, facilitating the mobility of the populations of the U.S. and Canada.

The covered wagon of the pioneers morphed into orange U-Haul trailers. In the process, an industry was born. Discharged from the Navy in the summer of 1945, 29-year-old Sam and Anna Mary tried to rent a utility trailer to move their possessions from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore. It couldn't be done. They had to take only what they could fit in the car. «No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.» «Small luggage-type passenger automobile trailers were being rented from 'rental lots' in Los Angeles. Each lot had from 20 to 40 trailers which were rented locally for approximately $2 per day,» recalled Shoen in his book «You and Me,» «I recognized that here was an item with considerable utility value which had not been exploited at all in the Northwest or in the San Francisco-Oakland area.

I was intrigued with the business potential of this idea, especially from the standpoint of one-way rentals.» The Shoens reasoned that many other families had a need similar to theirs: the short-term availability of a trailer that could be rented «here» and left «there.» No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.

This Uhaul is one of the best out there. Walked in asking about a trailer nothing too crazy to haul since it's my first time and I was helping move big furniture. Edwin was the most helpful and knowledgeable associate there. He helped me from the start till the end. It was like a 100 degrees outside and wasn't getting angry irritated nor annoyed even tho I was a beginner in trailers. So I just wanna say thank you to Edwin and I appreciate all his help and he is the definition of CUSTOMER SERVICE. Give this man a raise! Lol. Keep up the good work Edwin !

I have a tow install at 830, and I have been waiting inline for the past 30mins. There is about 10people in front of me to pick up trucks.   Management, NOT the workers needs to manage the workload spikes.  Daniel Marcias please look into this. I will call you on your cell per the sticker on the door.It took 50mins to check my car in, and find out the hitch installer is not in for 1more hour. Why make my reservation at 830am and ask me to come in earlier. That doesn't make sense.I'm calling the General Manager Daniel Marcius at 4087121386.

A cargo van was our only option as we found the junk removal service was steep. There was a little confusion over the phone as to the listing in Milpitas,  thankfully the person at the other end, Dan sorted it out.When we reached the location on busy Thursday afternoon,  Dan himself​ assisted and apologised for the confusion. With a rate of 19.95,  and the odometer rolling an  extra 72, it cost us less than $55-gas pump visit included.  I actually found them professional and organized compared to other rentals I've done. Thanks people

So much confusion -- I tried finding this place on Yelp, but it wasn't listed. Instead, UHaul of Milpitas kept coming up and it was the wrong address. Urgh.Anyway, this location has surpassed any of the other UHauls I've ever used, or any other place. I've moved so much in the past 20 years and when corporate moves were not going to do the move for us, we would do it ourselves. Let me say that this place is amazing.It's on the border of Milpitas and San Jose. Literally -- across the street where the Shell station is is Milpitas. This rests right on the cusp, but on the San Jose side. It even sports a San Jose zip.I've used this place off and on in the past 20 years -- trucks for Ikea trips, various shopping trips and each time I've been here the guys that have worked here have been nothing short of courteous and friendly, in spite of some shoddy customers who think it's ok to yell and scream at people. I know moving is stressful...no need to be a jerk.This last round I just needed boxes. I got a total of 8 and I did not expect anyone to help me carry the unassembled boxes. I was planning on bringing my car around and doing it myself. Lo and behold...one of the guys picked up my stuff and carried it to my car without even asking.He gave me the whole spiel about what to do with the extra boxes, but I knew I was probably going to be purchasing more on my next trip back.All in all, this is absolutely one of my favorite UHaul places I've had to use in my many adventures throughout the US.

We appreciated that they called us 15 minutes before we needed to pick up the van saying that they wouldn't have the size for us but willing to let us have the larger size at the same rate which was awesome. Luckily when we were there, two trucks came which was the size we wanted. Feel free to negotiate the mileage rate as they might be willing to lower it if you're lucky. It was an easy in and out and they're conveniently located off of Montague and Oakland.
