Since 1945, U-Haul has been serving do-it-yourself movers and their households. Like many other successful ventures, the concept for U-Haul was generated out of need. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. U-Haul co-founders L.S. «Sam» Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized that need and acted upon it. Their visionary approach spread the cost of ownership among many users, facilitating the mobility of the populations of the U.S. and Canada.

The covered wagon of the pioneers morphed into orange U-Haul trailers. In the process, an industry was born. Discharged from the Navy in the summer of 1945, 29-year-old Sam and Anna Mary tried to rent a utility trailer to move their possessions from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore. It couldn't be done. They had to take only what they could fit in the car. «No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.» «Small luggage-type passenger automobile trailers were being rented from 'rental lots' in Los Angeles. Each lot had from 20 to 40 trailers which were rented locally for approximately $2 per day,» recalled Shoen in his book «You and Me,» «I recognized that here was an item with considerable utility value which had not been exploited at all in the Northwest or in the San Francisco-Oakland area.

I was intrigued with the business potential of this idea, especially from the standpoint of one-way rentals.» The Shoens reasoned that many other families had a need similar to theirs: the short-term availability of a trailer that could be rented «here» and left «there.» No one, at that time, seemed ready or willing to serve that need.

I rented a van so I could pick up and antique bed in Woodbridge. I reserved it online, got there at 4;00pm, and there were two customers in front of me. It was only a five minute wait. The guy at the register was super fast, efficient and friendly.I was on my way in no time. It ended up costing me more then I was expecting, but I was driving a long distance and they were upfront about the price. The van was in good condition...a little on the bumpy side, but the brakes worked fine and so did the radio.I will definitely go to them in the future...or fine some guy with a truck.

I feel like i never want to use a UHaul, but sometimes just have to.This is the first time I've had a positive experience with UHaul. They were nice to me instead of condescending, as a girl by myself, were quick, efficient, cared about checking around the vehicle and the interior of the vehicle for damage and cleanliness even though i bought insurance, and the vehicle was in surprisingly excellent condition (a van).Price per mile seems more than i remembered ($.99) but it did the job. They even let me leave my car in their few parking spaces while i ran the errand. They were open the latest of the UHauls in the area so it was a lifesaver, and they were polite even though i came in just like 15 minutes before close.After drop off, they were even considerate enough to call me to let me know I left my sunglasses in the vehicle!Go here! DO NOT go to UHaul of Sunnyvale on El Camino. TERRRIBLE. The entire street in front of the UHaul was blocked off by police due to a shooting apparently close to there when we were to drop off a vehicle. It was critical we be able to drop it off at some UHaul that night as we were flying out in the early morning. We called the UHaul about the situation and they said "we don't care if someone died, if you return late or to another UHaul there will be extra charges." Wow.

Very impressed with the acoomodating services here at Uhaul. I needed an auto transport trailer Last minute, and was able to conveniently arrange one within a few hours through the Online services. When I came to pick up the trailer the staff was friendly, and helped me hook it up on my truck. . .the only problem was that i got a speeding tickets while i was attempting to get the trailer back in time. . . oops. not their fault though, definitely my bad. Minh was super friendly when I returned the trailer, and helped make the process really smooth.
