Delancey Street is the country's leading residential self-help organization for former substance abusers, ex-convicts, homeless and others who have hit bottom. Started in 1971 with 4 people in a San Francisco apartment, Delancey Street has served many thousands of residents, in 5 locations throughout the United States. Residents at Delancey Street range from teenagers to senior citizens, and include men and women and all races and ethnicities.

The average resident has been a hard-core drug and alcohol abuser, has been in prison, is unskilled, functionally illiterate, and has a personal history of violence and generations of poverty. The minimum stay at Delancey Street is 2 years while the average resident remains for almost 4 years – drug, alcohol and crime-free. During their time at Delancey Street, residents receive a high school equivalency degree (GED) and are trained in 3 different marketable skills.

Beyond academic and vocational training, residents learn important values, and the social and interpersonal skills that allow them to live successfully in the mainstream of society. Any act of violence, or threat of violence, is cause for immediate removal from Delancey Street. Interestingly, former gang members, who have sworn to kill each other, live and work together peacefully starting in dorm-rooms and moving up into their own apartments. Residents learn to work together promoting non-violence through a principle called “each-one-teach-one” where each new resident is responsible for helping guide the next arrival.

I used the San Francisco brand of Delancey to move from SF to LA and it was a fantastic experience. For my move to LA to Vegas, I thought I'd give the Los Angeles brand a try. What I found was uncommunicative and unresponsive management.- In mid-July I called to set up an estimate in late-July. I never received a confirmation call, so I called the day before to make sure someone was coming.- The estimate happened on a Tuesday. The manager said that he would email the estimate by the end of the week. That did not happen.- I called several times the following week about the estimate. Several times I was told "someone will call you back" and several times, nobody did. The estimate was finally emailed to me on August 3. The price looked great, so I replied that I would like to book a moving date.- My email reply was ignored, so I called back on August 4 and August 5. Again, I was told someone would get back to me.- Someone from the company finally called on August 9, saying that they couldn't do the move. At this point, I had already moved onto other companies.If you're looking for professional service and communication, look elsewhere. The people in the LA office of Delancey are inconsiderate and unprofessional. If they couldn't do the move then they shouldn't have wasted my time.

I loved the whole experience using Delancey Street. The guys showed up on time and were literally running in between the truck and my apartment. I said, dang, no need to run! But they kept on runnin! Moved my whole one bedroom apartment including making a second delivery 30 minutes away in 2 hours. They were super super nice guys.My only complaints are that sometimes they move so fast that being super careful sort of goes out the window. Whatever it was they did to my bed got it here but I was watching them fold my memory foam mattress like it was a taco and was thinking, mmmmm. Then weeks later when I opened my boxed turntable, I realized that the box must have been turned upside down or at least sideways as the whole thing was basically a disaster inside (arm which had been taped down totally dislocated, etc) - but I should have just followed my instincts and just taken that myself in my car. I would still definitely use them again for my next move.

I used Delancey Street Movers twice and would not hesitate to use them again. They had come highly recommended to me from others that had used them more then once. They were fast and efficient and took great care with my stuff. and they clean up and take away all the packing materials. I donate to this foundation because they do so much good to help people become productive members of society.

Horrible over-the- phone service by Michael in Montebello. I called , with my husband listening, about using their moving service. Michael answered the phone and he refused to answer simple questions. It was very odd at best, and he certainly did NOT have a customer service mind set. He just would not stop talking, so we could ask tge questions. He said our questions about moving were "very convoluted" WHEN I asked him for his name. We are not using this company. ...GUESS WHAT??!! They're fired before they are hired. Very disappointed because we wanted to give this organization a chance. HIS bad attitude lost it for everyone at that organization.
