Delancey Street Foundation Movers

This is my company

We are a community where people with nowhere to turn, turn their lives around. Delancey Street is the country's leading residential self-help organization for former substance abusers, ex-convicts, homeless and others who have hit bottom. Started in 1971 with 4 people in a San Francisco apartment, Delancey Street has served many thousands of residents, in 5 locations throughout the United States. Residents at Delancey Street range from teenagers to senior citizens, and include men and women and all races and ethnicities.

The average resident has been a hard-core drug and alcohol abuser, has been in prison, is unskilled, functionally illiterate, and has a personal history of violence and generations of poverty. The minimum stay at Delancey Street is 2 years while the average resident remains for almost 4 years – drug, alcohol and crime-free. During their time at Delancey Street, residents receive a high school equivalency degree (GED) and are trained in 3 different marketable skills.

Beyond academic and vocational training, residents learn important values, and the social and interpersonal skills that allow them to live successfully in the mainstream of society. Any act of violence, or threat of violence, is cause for immediate removal from Delancey Street. Interestingly, former gang members, who have sworn to kill each other, live and work together peacefully starting in dorm-rooms and moving up into their own apartments. Residents learn to work together promoting non-violence through a principle called “each-one-teach-one” where each new resident is responsible for helping guide the next arrival.

I experienced between $3,000 to $5,000 of damage in my recent move with Delancey Street Movers. I was sprinting from bedroom to living room to stop the damage from happening in real time. Most of the damage was recorded as it happened and was properly notated. Some of the damage became evident after the movers left and we did further unpacking.I had opted for repair / replacement insurance and paid extra as I have a few items that are rare. The central office has a very unconventional way of making things right though. For instance, in attempting to repair a hole in my brand new mattress, the office suggested that they repair the mattress themselves as part of their upholstery class which would give the men a chance to learn how to do upholstery. I asked how many days I would be without a bed and they said they didn't know. When you're moving, you're stressed out and you've probably been up late packing. Things feel rushed. In my case, when the guys showed up and shared their pre-pack assessment, I signed it, and again at the destination, assuming I had caught all the damage. This was not the case. Much of the damage revealed itself afterwards so make sure you go through the checklist together and unpack everything before they leave, even if it's a nuisance. One of the downsides of having movers who are in training is that they think they're saving you money by hurrying the move. In my case, that led to a good amount of damage. They would toss items into a quick mover without shrink-wrapping it first. They broke wheels off of AC units. The boys don't mean any harm, and they're doing their best and trying to move fast. Sadly my latest move was a disaster, with vintage and irreplaceable items being damaged and the call center saying that the cosmetic damage is petty and that the unit still functions.Photos scratched, frames scratched, art work not protected even though they said they are used to moving such things. I was moving quickly just to keep up.That's where I am now, some 3 months after I moved. No end in sight to the negotiations and some strange judgement calls by the office, where the manager says that a scratched 80's vintage amp still functions, even if it no longer looks like it did.  During the move I had asked if it would be boxed, but the movers assured me that using a furniture pad is the way to go. What looked like a greasy finger print ended up being a bunch of scratches. The office things that it's petty to call these out- or the ones on the photographs that they had placed clothing hangers on.I wanted to support the foundation and even gave a good donation, but I regret I will not use them again, or if I do, I will use full-insurance and make sure every box is checked to cover the damages they have done. This move was terrible. I'll update this review pending the way the decide to resolve this.

I'd used Delancey in San Francisco to move me down to LA a few years ago. It was a wonderful experience and, despite quirkiness in their working rules owing to the nature of their program, would (and did) rate them highly. When I had to move last April, I again called on Delancey Street for a 2-part pack and move job. Much in contrast to the SF-LA move, it was an abject disaster. The attitude of the workers was less than professional, and their approach to the work reflected that. I wound up with about $7K in damage to my household goods, including a number of limited-edition collectibles and more.Attempts to address my complaints to Dr. Mimi Silbert, the President and Founder of the organization went unaddressed, with only commentary from the home office being that they could not address my issues as I had to go through their insurance company (who took about 6 months to process and pay the damage claim) and refused to give me any contact information or person(s) of responsibility at the insurance company with whom I might be able to address my concerns.I admire the Delancey Street Foundation program's goals, but if they wish to transform the lives of the residents of their program, they need to get out and interact with the general population (with whom they are doing business) and execute their jobs to the established norms of a professional moving company. That's not the case in my last experience with them.

I cannot rave enough about these guys. They are incredible! Professional, curteous, experienced, fast, careful with fragile items. They work hard and are such a great team! They really know what they're doing.  Above all they are very caring, polite and all around good guys. While they were on their way to my new place with my stuff I lost my cat at the new place. Of course I was devastated. Not only did they try and make me feel better, after everything was in the apt and we had settled up they went above and beyond and went looking for my cat everywhere.I wanted to let them know - I found her!!! She was in the basement. You guys are amazing! I will never use anyone ever again except you!

These guys are great! We recently had a huge move from a 3-story townhouse to a 1-story flat home (all within the SFV area). Delancey Movers came in, boxed everything up, marked each box according to category (dishes, living room, electronics, etc), and moved with efficiency. Depending on your needs, you can coordinate to have 2 movers, or a team of 5-6. They also provided storage services for us, since our new places wasn't ready to be moved in for 1 month after our move-out. Therefore, we needed temporary storage -- and they provided that. Thanks Delancey!
