History

Established in 2013. Self-storage sucks. I started Clutter in 2013 because I wanted a simple and convenient way to access and keep track of the things that wouldn't fit in my apartment. Instead of the inconvenience and frustration of a dusty self-storage facility I wanted a visual inventory of everything I had in storage and an easy way to have my boxes delivered to me. Technology has changed the way we hail cabs, book hotels, and make restaurant reservations. Changing the way we store the stuff we care about is next. I wanted a simple storage solution that was easy, convenient, and helped me remember the cool things I had safely locked away--so I started Clutter.

I couldn't have been more impressed with Clutter's customer service, attention and care and competence of the movers - thanks Kevin W and Eric O. (They even took something I did not need directly to Salvation Army for donation on their way out).If you want an uncomplicated, competent and hassle-free move and storage Clutter is the solution.

DISCLAIMER: This is the first half of a review, because I put my stuff into storage and don't know how the back end will go. I plan to update at the conclusion. My review is broken down into two categories: Clutter phone service/intake and movers.Service/Intake: Ummmm...not so impressive. The guy I talked to on the phone was nice but pressure-y (I needed to get my life in order ASAP so I didn't have a lot of time to shop all my options, sadly). I He also added insurance to my plan while making it sound like it was included. Granted, I think everyone should have insurance, but my renter's insurance covers storage, so there's no need for me to pay anything extra. Clutter also promised me a 10am-noon arrival time but my confirmation email said Clutter had changed its policy and would be arriving between 9am-1pm. Okay, CABLE GUYS. Like I really needed the added stress of a longer window on moving day. NO. Emily (my email care rep) apologized and said she'd added a $65 labor credit and removed the insurance fee. She didn't. Luckily, Juan Carlos (see below) fixed those things for me when we were settling up.Movers: CONRAD AND JUAN CARLOS WERE AWESOME!! These guys took great care in wrapping and cataloging my items. They were also funny, and we joked around a lot during the process, which everyone knows is a total pain. I mean, seriously, moving is THE WORST. The guys definitely eased the process. I plan to request them for my re-delivery. Just stellar dudes. However, I think Clutter's $65 per hour PER mover is steep -- especially when the company requires the movers to do this crazy furniture wrapping that takes forever. My move took 3.5 hours -- and Conrad and Carlos had moved all my boxes in less than an hour. I appreciate the care in protecting my stuff, but I didn't expect the time it would take, and it's not like you can opt out. I ended up paying close to $500 just for the movers, which is WAY more money than I had to spend. Again, the guys were awesome and did a great job. They can't help that the company policy is kinda whack.

Clutter movers delivered my coffee table valued over $2K,  left it on the curb, and drove off. Let me say that again. The movers left it on the curb and drove off.  The delivery record shows that the barcode was scanned. But it never made it into the apartment.  Clutter refuses to compensate me for my loss. The coffee table is a 4x3 foot beautiful hand carved/painted wooden coffee table with hand riveted iron and detachable glass top. It doesn't take an American Pickers expert to see it's a valuable item.I took the risk to authorize a friend to receive my furniture, but the worst I thought would happen is something breaks or a small item would get lost. Not my most valuable piece of furniture! Here's what happened: The movers had to leave and my friend told them to leave the rest of the items downstairs inside the gate (there was a lot of stuff). ---- The movers neglected to tell him there's a large coffee table with a large piece of glass wrapped separately outside that won't fit inside the gate nor that he won't be able to carry up the flight of stairs himself. -- --  Since there was no room inside the gate the movers took it upon themselves to leave the coffee table on the curb, and left. It was gone before my friend got downstairs to retrieve the rest of the items (or perhaps the movers took off with it. The neighbors claim they never saw it. We will never know. The movers told the Clutter internal investigating team that my friend instructed them to leave the coffee table on the curb. But this is a lie as my friend was never given all the information what was downstairs. My friend should have gone downstairs yes, but he was overwhelmed. Either way, there is no excuse for this lack of negligence.  Clutter movers have a hard job there is no doubt, but this is poor training at the company level to be so careless with people's most cherished items. That coffee table can be replaced but I don't have $2K to come up with the money.Until this my experience with Clutter has been fair. Customer support was always good (until now). Movers work hard but take less than clear photos of your stuff so when you're on your inventory page you can't tell what's what on some of the photos (I am told movers are trained better in photography now). The best thing about Clutter is that they pick up your items for you and store them. But they don't return individual items. Who needs an apartment worth of stuff delivered when you just need a box of DVDs. Personal storage units are better if you need that kind of access.

I'm waffling between two and three stars. Their prices are outrageous. $279/month for their "studio" size IF AND ONLY IF you book 12 months, totalling $3500/year. God have mercy on your soul if you do shirt term, when the price for same unit is well over $500/month.Unlike any unnamed competitor, Clutter charges an hourly rate for their movers. Their unnamed competitor had previously done both a move in and move out service with the exact same furniture in the exact same unit (break-up are fun!) and it took two guys about an hour. Now with Clutter (who sent three guy instead of two), it's taken more than twice as long. 50% more manpower shouldn't mean 100% more time. Oh and just to rub salt in the wounds of anyone who is so unfortunate to need short term storage, the hourly rate for the movers is doubled for them ($35/hr - $70/hr PER MOVER).I was in a bind. I needed the services within 48 hours no ifs ands or buts. They were on time, at the beginning of the window, very friendly and did flawless work. The only thing I take issue with is the pricing, which is pretty shameless. After this service, neither my apartment nor my bank account will have any "Clutter."

Very bad accounting practices and the company changes its policy as it is a startup.  Leaving the clients hanging with the bill with no notification and communication.  I will not recommend anyone to use the service because of their accounting practices.  As a client to clutter who spent more than $2,000 and getting the account closed by clutter at the end is a shame.  More details to follow.
