This review is from a long time ago, and I can only hope they are out of business, because they sure do suck.  They refused to work in the rain and still wanted pay for doing no work and sitting on the truck for two hours.  Then it because of that, the move continued to 5pm at which time they say they don't work any more and were going to leave with my stuff still on the truck and bring it back another day...EXCUSE ME??? So then they made me pay them "overtime" to finish the job and only accepted cash.

Why isn't there a zero star option?I organized my move from Chicago to DC through United States Van Lines (uslvmoves.com), which contracted to Able Moving.  My move was quoted around $1300 and I put a deposit down for half. They just called to confirm the balance that needs to be paid upon delivery (which can only be paid by cashiers check or cash), and it's DOUBLE my original quote.  My balance should only be around $650, but apparently I owe them $1100, bringing the total cost of my move to nearly $1800!  $500 MORE THAN WAS ORIGINALLY QUOTED!My stuff hasn't arrived yet (it will get here tomorrow or Sunday), so hopefully it's in once piece.  When they give me a breakdown of the costs, I'm sure it's going to be hundreds of dollars for "extra boxes" and "labor."DO NOT go with one of those big moving companies that contract out.  Rent yourself a U-Haul or just find a local company yourself.UPDATE: These arse-holes "lost" a number of my belongings, including a large 5x5 bookcase (how you lose a giant bookcase, I have no idea).  Phone calls to Able Moving inquiring about my stolen items have gone unanswered.

By far, this is the worst moving company I've ever had.  I don't know how to fully express how terrible this moving company is.  Let me put it this way: I joined yelp so that I could write this review.  My experience with Able began May 29th, when they arrived at my apartment for my move five hours late.  Originally, my mover said he might have to add some boxes to my estimate, which would be an additional few hundred dollars, but no more than that.  His name was Eric Terman.  He's about 300 pounds.  (I know this because when estimating what 3000 pounds was, he told me it was ten of him.   It wasn't very helpful.)   Anyway, after he told me the approximate extra cost (the original estimate was for $1550 from Chicago to New York), he went downstairs for a cigarette.  When he came back up, he told me he needed me to sign a bunch of new forms.  The new forms had upped the estimate from $1550 to $3950.  No joke.  I told him there was no way I was signing anything that had an estimate that high.  I asked to speak to his boss, at which point he told me I was not allowed to have his direct line, but that he could call him for me on his phone.  After two hours on the phone with his boss (Jeremy) and the broker (Nationwide Relocation Services--another terrible company--Joshua Wiley was our agent), I finally got them to say that I would only be charged per box (this did not turn out well either as I will explain below).  The two guys then took four hours to move all of my stuff out of my apartment, half packed all my boxes, and ended up damaging a lot of my stuff.  They also were so late that I lost $200 on my elevator.  They didn't start using it until 15 minutes before my time was up, but I still lost the $200.  They also decided to charge me for a walking fee ($75) and a parking ticket ($150), which they incurred after I told them to move the truck.  Then we went to my other friend's building where she lost her entire deposit for the elevators because they came outside the window for her elevator after being late to mine.  After secretly moving her boxes out of her apartment, they were finally on their way.Different men arrived in New York a few days later with a new charge of $2600.  My roommate and I disputed the charge and wanted to pay the contracted price or 110% of the estimate, which is what the contract said we would have to pay in the event of a dispute.  We spoke to the manager of the company who told us we had to pay in full and dispute the charge later.  We finally acquiesced after 4 hours of arguing with Tracie Terman (Eric's sister is my guess, and possibly the worst person to have as a customer service agent) and stated we would pay with a credit card as promised by our broker.  When we tried to pay with a credit card (after 6pm), we were told we could not and had to pay cash or through a wire.  As it was impossible for us to pay them $2600 in cash after 6pm because no banks were open, they drove away with all our stuff.  Instead of storing it in a facility in new york, these movers took our stuff to New Jersey and refused to give us any information about the storage place (they said on the phone that they had moved it to a storage place nearby) until we paid in full.  Forced into it, we paid the fee, in addition to a $250 storage fee, and waited a full two weeks before they sent the key to us to get our stuff.  When we finally got the key, we had to rent a car, and pay for new movers to get our stuff from New Jersey and bring it back to New York.  These people overcharged us for things already in the estimate, charged us for things like a storage facility, parking ticket, and walking fees, and still haven't sent us a receipt.  They are the WORST moving company that exists, and I would like to put them out of business.  If you ever hear of someone wanting to use Able Moving, tell them not to.  This is a terrible company, with terrible customer service.  They will break your stuff, and charge you extra for it.  I'm planning on bringing a lawsuit.  If anyone else has had a similar experience, email me and we can all bring it together.

My journey with Able moving began with a scam brokering company called World Wide Vane Lines, and continued on with the terrible crew over at Able.I needed to move from Chicago to Brooklyn, so I called many moving companies, and ended up with Darryl Lawson at World Wide Van Lines (WWVL) because they offered me the best price. The quote was for $898.00. In retrospect, this price was obviously too good to be true, but having never moved across country, I had no point of reference.I signed a contract with WWVL guaranteeing me the quoted price (in fact, in bold letters scrolled across the top, it read, "COST SHALL NOT EXCEED QUOTE!").Two days before my move date, I get a call from, "dispatch" at Able Moving, saying that my pick up window would be between 10am-1pm on a Sat. I packed everything myself, because I couldn't afford their materials. I even wrapped and packed my furniture even though my contract with WWVL said that all of that would be included. They arrived at my apartment 5 hours late. The movers were nice enough they loaded my things, seeming to take care with the boxes labeled delicate, and finished in about 4 hours. They asked me to sign an inventory sheet, and a form stating weight overage cost if the weight was above the allotted 4,000 pounds. They then left with everything I owned, and told me I would get a call on Sunday with my drop of date. They also said that my Guaranteed date of delivery was Wednesday.Well, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday came and went, and several phone calls and messages to both companies were ignored. Finally on Thursday, I received a phone call from Tracy at Able moving telling me that my drop off date would be Sat (4 days late) and that my new bill would be $1,900.00. I called Darryl to inquire why my bill would be more than double my original estimate, and he stated the following.1. My goods were 400 pounds over weight - They were charging me .50cents a pound even though my contract stated .36cents.2. They were required to use a shuttle (smaller truck to pick up and drop off and a semi to cross country) - My contract said all moving lifting and loading was included in the cost, and had no clause or notification of any such cost anywhere on it.3. The movers used materials to pack my apartment - The movers used my materials (shrink wrap, Boxes, Furniture pads, Tape) and I packed everything before hand. The only thing that they did was re wrap my bed, which again was included in my contract.4. Once Able moving enters my home and loads my goods into their truck, my contract with WWVL is null and void. - WTF! Also, nowhere on this contract that I signed and paid a down payment on, does it say anything that I might as well wipe my ass with it, because it is worth nothing. So, I called Tracy back at Able moving, and she proceeded to laugh at me and tell me that if I didn't have the 1,900.00 to pay them, they would take my things, put them in storage and I would be graced with the honor of paying for said storage per day until I paid them, or they auctioned off my things. So, in summary. Neither company is interested in upholding contracts, neither company is running any sort of legitimate business aside from a scam. And neither company should have any more business brought to them ever again. If anyone out there can learn anything from my obvious stupidity, it should be never trust a broker, even if they are, "certified" by the FMCSA. Never trust Tracy, Jeremy or anybody else at Able Moving, Inc.  And if you are able bodied and have friends, for god sakes, move yourself.****UPDATE*****Still no resolution, 4 months later. There was close to $10,000 worth of damaged and/or stolen goods.
