Customer service does not get better than this store, Jeff and his team went out of their way to help me and my mom.  They installed a hitch on our new car, called before the appointment to confirm the parts were all in, and the day of the install everything was done perfectly, i was in and out in about an hour.  We just also rented a truck and an auto transporter from them and again wonderful guys.  This will be our first time towing anything, and his guys were very kind and explained everything to us, all the safety issues, the importance of the Tow safe insurance.  I am so glad i found this store, making my families move so much easier.

This place is a joke! You're already spending money to rent something from them, but that's not enough! They're always tryin to get you to buy something else. Weather it be an adapter for your trailer lights, or something additional for your hitch. You can't just go pick up your trailer, they always want more. With all that said, we will never be back. We will make the extra trips just with our own truck!

I will never go back to this location, which is frustrating because it's by far the closest to where I live, but regardless, here was my experience.I booked the truck online. It's cheap enough, they advertise the size I needed at $29.99. By the time all was said and done, I was charged $57.91. I was told this includes taxes and mileage fee. I literally put 4 miles on the truck. I drove it from San Pedro to my apartment in Monte Vista, to my new apartment in Olmos Park, back to the store. 4 miles cost almost $20 more than the advertised price. Be warned as most moves take more than 4 miles. The truck itself was absolutely disgusting. It smelled more like smoke than most bars before the ban, had a cup of hot chocolate left inside that was growing mold (which I threw away immediately) and there was a visible layer of dirt on the dashboard and seats. It was just really gross. These trucks are what this business does, you would think they would respect them more and keep them clean, but I guess not. Now, this next part was my mistake: I left an open box of dishes behind the driver's seat. I had used to cab to hold breakable odds and ends that I didn't want riding in the back, and unloaded all of it minus my dishes. I returned the truck and went on my way to the apartment. After unpacking I realized I had no dishes and knew exactly where they were left. It had been a few days before this final realization was made. This is U-Hual's mistake in the matter: No one bothered to call me and tell me dishes were left. It's not like a small thing left behind. Every single dish I own I'm fairly certain should have been noticeable. BUT, since they obviously don't spend anytime cleaning or caring for these trucks, perhaps they didn't notice it. But, they did know how many miles I had driven and how much gas I had replaced, so my guess is it stands to reason that they climbed into the cab of that truck to get those numbers.  I called several times, and though the people who took my messages were friendly, no one ever returned my call. I went by one time in person to ask about it and the man was so absolutely rude, "Well, look it's not exactly our fault you left it behind." I never even suggested it was their fault, in fact, it was my mistake, but somewhere there is a box of my dishes left in a truck and I would simply like to get them back.I would also love some decent customer service. Return phone calls even if you don't have the item I lost, letting me know would have been so much more appreciated.

Following my graduation from college i got a job out in the San Francisco Bay Area. Luckily, my new company was going to be paying for my moving expenses (which i greatly appreciated), but my girlfriend and i decided to save the company as much coin as possible and do it on the cheap: rent a truck, pack up all our stuff ourselves, and drive it out to CA, staying at the homes of people we know along the way. So about a week ahead of our planned departure day i roll into U-Haul to reserve a quote. I go over my plans with the guy to make sure everything is going to work, he says it will. I reserve a 14 foot truck (the second smallest) and a small tow dolly to pull my car. Get a quote, price is reasonable, everything is good. A week later i come by to pick it up and they pull out the 26 foot truck (the largest in their fleet), instead of the 14 foot truck i reserved and a large car towing trailer instead of the small tow dolly i reserved (the trailer put the entire car up off the road, while the small tow dolly was only the front two wheels). Not only was i going to have to deal with driving this 26 foot behemoth across the country, they were going to make me pay the rate of the 26 foot truck and the huge trailer instead of the 14 foot truck and tow dolly i reserved. Why even have reservations if you aren't going to honor them?We had to leave the next day in order to get to California in time, and no other truck rental places had anything else available, so i reluctantly accepted. We went home to pack it up and it was maybe 1/4 full, this was pathetic. The next morning we get up and start heading west. This thing took up the entire lane and the steering was super loose, so it was tough to control. Luckily we left at 6am, trying to get out of town during rush hour surely would have left someone dead. It was reasonably cool that morning, so we didn't realize until we were about 100 miles outside of San Antonio that the AC was broken, pretty inconvenient for a road trip across the desert in the summer. 18 hours later we arrived at our friend's house in Phoenix. The loose steering combined with the wind blowing across the desert and the drafts from 18 wheelers speeding by (did i mention that this thing was so weak that it could only get up to 65mph and was pulling 45mph up hills?) had me convinced that i was going to die that day as we got blown around the road. Thats not even bringing into account the broken AC. It was over 100 degrees in the cab. I drove in nothing but soccer shorts because it was so damn hot. 3 days after leaving San Antonio, by the sheer grace of God we made it to the Bay Area physically unscathed, mentally, i'll be scarred for life. We haphazardly find an apartment in 3 days and i take the truck to a U-Haul truck return center in Belmont instead of the one we originally arranged to return it to 30 minutes away in San Jose.I get there and the guy gets on me for not returning the truck with a full tank of gas, even though it was only half full when i got it, and this thing guzzled WAY more gas than the 14 foot truck i reserved.  He's unsympathetic, there's a $100 fee for that. Turns out i was also supposed to return the truck before noon even though no one told me that it it doesn't show up ANYWHERE on the paperwork. $100 fee for that too. WTF? There's also a $150 fee for returning the truck to the wrong location. He tells me that if i call some number i can get it waived. I call it and the girl is a total bitch and refuses to waive the fee. I finally get pissed off and tell them screw it, give me the keys, i'll go gas it up and take it to the right location to avoid $250 in fees, but they say that i've already started the return process so they can't let me have the truck back. After a spend a few minutes yelling at them (the first time i have ever done anything like this in my 23 years) i realize that no amount of yelling is going to change anything right now and i sign the papers and leave.Called the service number the next day and was told there is no way to file complaints with U-Haul. How convenient. I will never use U-Haul again for anything, not even filling the propane tank for my gas grill. They are directly responsible for three or four most stressful, scary, and just flat out awful days of my life, and then hit me for an extra $350 in ridiculous charges. I reserved a 14 foot truck and they gave me a 26 footer with a broken AC and dangerously loose steering. Then they hit me up for $350 in penalty charges which were never outlined in the contract or described to me by a sales person. I'd rather slam my balls in a car door than deal with you folks again.
