U-Haul of University City

U-Haul gets a bad rap because of the quality of its staff, upkeep of its trucks etc. But the University City location is a pleasant surprise.When busy, any U-Haul location can get somewhat tedious to manage. They have 2-3 staff members only so the moment one of the them steps out to go inspect a truck or gets busy with a customer, the availability declines by 33-50%. U-Haul doesn't allow you to pick the time for pick-up in advance, and I was automatically assigned 12 noon. I received the e-mail assigning my reservation to this location only the day before the reservation even though I had already picked it at the time of the reservation. Not sure what the deal is there. But so I called up this place and told her that 12 noon would not work and that I would need it at 8 am. She promptly made the change, was very cordial, and I received a confirmatory e-mail seconds later.This place has 2 people at most times which helps keep the line moving. The morning of the reservation, it turned out they did not have the furniture dolly I had ordered at the time of reservation. This is a standard U-Haul problem. In fact it appears that the accessories chosen at the time of reserving the vehicle don't actually show up in the system the chaps at the store have access to. (When I went to return the truck in a different city, someone picking one up was in line ahead of me, and she had the same problem.) But the place the University City location shines is what Stephen, the manager did next. He made sure I got a furniture dolly to take with me.The truck was new, with 14K miles on it. It drove fine.

After arriving at the Uhaul store where we had reserved a 9-foot van, we were told that our reservation had been moved to this location. We traveled here at our own expense and after waiting in an enormous line, were told we had been "upgraded" to a huge truck we had not requested. As you can see, the store prominently displays a sign stating that they will give a $50 rebate if the reservation is not as agreed upon. That sign is personally signed by the manager, Laneesha Harris. However, she has declined to honor their policy on the grounds that this was an "upgrade." We have now been given the WRONG equipment at the WRONG location, resulting in a long wait at a hot store for a less safe vehicle with worse gas mileage. Their company owner lists his cell phone but did not pick up. I never complain about things (I typically write reviews only for positive experiences), but this was beyond the pale. Other customers in the same store were having the same experience: overpromise, underdeliver, no apology or expression of sympathy. I suggest renting elsewhere.

We had a reservation for 24 hours a week or more in advance, but the morning on the day before our reservation, we got a notification that our reservation was changed to 20 hours, which threw off everything completely because we needed those 4 hours the next day to move in in the morning. We called UHaul and the representatives basically told us to suck it, and that reserving out time that you already had reserved to other people were essentially their business practice. Instead of trying to accommodate us, they just told us they could cancel our reservation or just charge us double for the late fee.

The general manager here was very nice and helpful. Which makes the rest of the experience here pleasant. I was just here to fill out for a job, but seen everything you would need to move. There were boxes for days, trucks outside lined up in every size and all your moving needs. From what I seen, the general manager answered everyone's questions accordinly, didn't have an attitude and was very personal in my book.
