This is an update, on speaking with the district manager who was very kind and understanding of the situation that occurred and the fact that we had so many issues with the truck (the gate flying off the back) she went and fixed the problem promptly. Sorry for the time it took to go and update but life gets in the way.

The worst moving experience of my life started with the u-haul facility at this Chicago location. I recently moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, which was a very hard experience even without the complete nightmare that was u-haul's customer service. I made the mistake of choosing to use u-haul's moving/storage option called u-box. NEVER USE U-BOX! Literally no one in the corporation was trained properly on how this service works and I've had roughly a dozen changes to my order because someone was trying to "fix" something in the system. First: the boxes are considerably smaller than any other moving/storage alternative, making it really hard to pack bigger items like couches and beds. So I had to order an extra box after the movers already arrived, and that made all hell break loose. That evening I was on the phone with u-haul at least 2 hours while the movers are there, trying to work around the technical difficulties they were experiencing on their end. Eventually a box got added, but the movers had to leave, so I had to pay another $200 extra the next day to have them come back to get the box (which I had to load myself) to ensure it wouldn't get separated from the rest of my stuff. Then Justin, the general manager got involved. He had to call me to charge more money to my card. At this point, he ensured me my stuff with be delivered together and on time by the date given to me: June 16. A few days pass, it's a holiday weekend and I was busy apartment hunting in my new city...then I look at my u-haul account. Not only had they been sending multiple emails a day (I'm up to 37 emails in about 3 weeks), but my delivery date changed multiple times and I had 2 or 3 other orders on my account that I never placed. I don't know who was responsible for them (whether it was someone on the corporate end or if it was done in error while I was trying to add the additional storage box on), but I've had to call uhaul daily for a week and a half to try to resolve these issues. Then Justin called back into my week of panic and leaves a rude voicemail informing me that no, I was wrong, my stuff was getting there on time. I left a message for him to return my call, in part because I want to file for the refund I'm now supposed to receive, but he never called me back. Also, I confirmed with several other avenues of u-haul: my delivery date changed, it was definitely going to be late.I'm now living across the country from my family and friends, and instead of calling them to catch up, I've had to spend every single night on the phone with u-haul trying to fix the mess they've made. I've never been more disappointed by an organization, let alone on that works in the field of customer service. Not only would I strongly suggest avoiding this location, but avoid u-haul entirely. Moving is stressful enough as it is; your moving company should help ease that stress, not make it worse.

10/13/15I am writing today to complain about an horrific customer service experience I had recently, with the manager of the UHaul rental center on West Fullerton Ave., in Chicago. Before I begin describing the details of this incident, I think it might be important to note that I have managed a Uhaul Center  years ago,and I realize the difficulties in dealing with a customer base that is often highly stressed because of the anxieties of the moving process.  In this case the highly stressed, anxiety ridden party was their manager and not this customer.I also would like to point out that I rent trucks and trailers from UHaul  on a very regular basis -- with probably a dozen rentals of the past few years. I am one of UHaul's most valuable type of client: A regular, loyal renter. The details of my complaint are as follows:I reserved a Auto Transport trailer, online, for a one-way rental that was originally to be dispatched from the UHaul rental center at 4?00 West Fullerton in Chicago. When I arrived to pick up the auto transport I had reserved, I had the unfortunate experience of standing at the counter for over 5 minutes, listening to the UHaul Manager yelling at a customer over the phone about how a storage unit that had been broken into was not UHaul's responsibility. The UHaul Managers' tone, volume and dismissive attitude toward his phone customer was the first clue as to the type of character I was dealing with. A rude, callous and sarcastic rebuttal was delivered loudly, while I waited patiently. When the manager got off the phone, and visibly agitated he greated me with a "Yeah?"  I replied that I had a trailer rental reservation, which he looked up and sent me to the lot to "make sure my towing vehicle was OK" before initiating any paperwork.  When I was shown the Auto Transport trailer that was being suggested, I was shocked. In 30 years of renting Haul products I had never seen such a run-down, worn-out and questionably unsafe vehicle be offered for rent:  The Auto Transport had multiple rusted-through holes in the frame and deck, it had exposed wiring dangling from the tail lights, rusted out wheels and fenders and a license plate that was not up-to-date. (I've sent photos to Haul) In fact this AT unit was so bad that the built-in tongue lift wouldn't even lift the trailer tongue high enough to attach to my standard height Type IV hitch.  The lot attendant had to lift the trailer tongue the final two inches, by hand, because the trailer jack was dysfunctional.I asked the lot attendant if either of the other two Auto Transport trailers on the lot were available and he instructed me to go back inside and ask the manager.  When I returned to the customer service counter, the manager had already written up my contract specifying the decrepit transport trailer as my rental. I politely asked if it would be possible to rent a different trailer to which the manager bluntly responded, "No." With no explanation. I then asked if there were "any other options?", to which the manager replied with a nasty attitude; "Why?, What's wrong with the trailer you've got?"  I responded that the trailer was "in terrible condition." Your manager responded with; "Then go somewhere else!"I was shocked and tried to reason with him, stating: "There are two other Auto Transports on the lot, are they not available?"  To which your manager responded; "You're not renting one here, get off my lot."I attempted to 'make peace' by stating that "If I don't have any choice, I don't have any choice. If I have to take that trailer I will." To which the hot-head Manager replied: "You're not renting a trailer from me. Go somewhere else!"Now, I don't expect you to take my word in describing the unnecessarily confrontational style and manner that was served up by your manager... But know that I am a 54 year old, father, husband and business owner and I'm mature enough to recognize when I'm dealing with a lost-cause. This guy was and is a threatening and unbalanced character, so I left the customer service counter area to avoid a potential explosion of this guys' shocking lack of impulse control. To recap:  I relented to accepting the dangerously decrepit trailer on offer; Telling the manager "If I don't have any choice, I don't have any choice. If I have to take that trailer I will."  He refused, for no reason and then tried to 'scare' me off the lot, with absolutely no provocation other than questioning the safety of the trailer he was forcing me to accept. This is simply NOT acceptable behavior and was in fact so aggressive and threatening that I am writing today so that there is a record of this employees aggressive and threatening behavior on file, should someone else become a victim of this managers' dangerous impulse control issues.Yelp has several complaints about this guys' swearing and aggressive attitude with customers, yet nothing done by UHaul?

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The manager is extremely unfriendly and was swearing at me. Must have had a case of the Mondays, or just naturally a jerk. I would NEVER go to the place again. The guy acts like he owns Uhaul and he runs the whole show. I give them an F-----

Yipes!  No reviews since an unhappy one 2 years ago....  I'll go ahead and vouch for this location.  Uhaul is never overly impressive (lost reservations, delays, etc.) but overall I was really happy with this location.  The staff was friendly, patient, and I was able to get in and out quickly with no hassle.  It's a huge facility so they have many more trucks and are much better organized than the "authorized retailer" type places.  Thumbs up, folks.  :)
