First off, this review comes with a caveat. I used South Shore for three different moves, all over ten years ago, in the early 2000's. I recently had a poor moving experience with another company, and it made me wistful for those first two South Shore crews I had, so I thought I'd come on here and check out their reviews. I can't really speak for how they are in 2015, but if and when I move again, I might give them a ring. The first two times I used them, their service was fantastic. Their 3-man crews were wonderful, and actually made moving an enjoyable experience, as hard as that is to believe. They were truly a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately there is high turnover in the moving industry, and the crew I got the third time was less professional and helpful (although competent), which is why I'm not giving 5 stars. I also found their rates very reasonable, and they always came in at or below estimate. It's confusing because there are two "South Shore Movers" listed on Yelp at two different addresses on Ogden. I hope I am reviewing the right one.

We used this company to help load a truck several years ago (summer 2001)  when we moved from Hyde Park to Dallas. I can see the same people are working there, even though they disappeared for a while. After we called and set up an appointment, The boss sent three guys who worked hard to carry our boxed belongings down the stairs and to the truck we had rented. The workers asked for a tip, which we paid generously, along with lunch and cold lemonaid. In Texas we unloaded the truck ourselves to find our stereo, lamps, and our IBM laptop computer (on which I had just written my doctoral dissertation) missing. We found the boxes that had been riffled and called the company. They initially said they would send claims form and call us back. They did not. Then they said they had spoken to the three men who claimed they had done nothing. At this point the story became, "your other movers must have done it (there were no other movers), and you can't prove anything."They never returned a single phone call, and eventually started hanging up on us. I had to go back to Chicago, and while there I filed a police report and a detective tried to question the three employees. In turned out by that time, all three were in jail on other charges! We filed a complaint with the BBB, which was never resolved. South Shore Movers are thieves.

My girlfriend and I were very happy with South Shore Movers and will use these guys again in the future. Malachi, the owner, was very prompt in providing a quote and following up. He arrived with two other guys and a large truck for a 1-bedroom move, and went out of his way to pick up wardrobe boxes when I mentioned them on our confirmation call. All of the guys were friendly (donuts helped!) and moved nonstop throughout the entire move. Malachi was especially attentive to wrapping up our furniture, making sure glass was protected on our TV stand, etc. He relies on referrals and works accordingly. At the end of the day, we paid a little more than expected but it was NOT because of anything the movers did (our building had an unexpected procedure). The damage? Two mugs and a glass fell out of a box that I didn't tape.Thanks, guys. I recommend this company to others.
